The “Internet generation” is increasingly making its presence felt, which in turn is affecting the growth of the English language.

Social networking sites including Twitter, MySpace and Bebo have added 267 additional words, some of which are sounds to the Colllins English Dictionary, including ‘hmm’ and ‘heh’.
Twitter, the word, has two entries in the dictionary, as both a verb and a noun.

In addition, the current recession has contributed to the growth, the term ‘staycation’ being included for the first time.

The editorial director of Collins said the addition of these new words may not be permanent, as they may fall out of use in the coming years.
